Commercial operators have realised the potential of opening up obscure destinations accessible by sea and now there is a huge range of adventure holidays afloat to choose from. Dive or surf cruises guarantee action with plenty of sunbathing opportunities between activities; there are also yacht and traditional sailing boat charters.

A yacht charter is the most convenient and affordable way to experience the freedom of sailing without the problems of owning a boat. It is also an enjoyable way to experience some of the most extraordinary coastal areas in the region without being confined to a resort. An increasing number of boats are now available for charter throughout the region, whether for the seasoned skipper or the sailing novice.

Some of Asia's most spectacular and thrilling dive and surf sites are in remote, hard-to-reach locations. "Live-aboards" are a way for the adventurous to reach these areas. They can transport the adventurer in air-conditioned comfort to Asia's untouched dive sites and awesome reef breaks.

There are more than 98 live-aboards in Asia. These range from luxury vessels like the SS Thorfinn in Truk, Micronesia, to basic converted local fishing boats. The advantage of live-aboards is that they provide access to untouched reefs - pristine dive sites that are unscarred by fishing and pollution. "Frontier diving", as live-aboard diving is often called, is available in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Palau, the Philippines and Australia.

There are exotic options too. Many Asian countries have, throughout a long history of maritime trade, developed superb sailing vessels with distinctive characteristics. Some travel operators are now converting these traditional crafts into recreational cruising boats, using the distinctive style of the boats to add to the charm of the cruising experience.
